Your favorite chain coffee shops like Starbucks and Dunkin’ do use real green tea powder in their matcha drinks. All US Dunkin' locations still use a sweetened matcha powder, while per recent updates in 2025, Starbucks locations in the US have stopped automatically using pre-sweetened matcha powder in their matcha lattes. Now when ordering a matcha latte from Starbucks, the barista will ask you if you'd like one of three options:

  • You can choose the barista to prepare 'customizable' sweetness using their simple syrup while preparing your matcha, which you can have with a small, medium, or large amount of sweetness.
  • You can also ask for no syrup and then choose to sweeten your match to your liking your brown sugar, granulated sugar, and other sweetener options they give you to self serve.
  • You can opt for completely unsweetened powder.

We should note however that the matcha tea powder used is technically not traditional Japanese matcha green tea powder and therefore it lacks a lot of the health benefits that real ceremonial-grade matcha tea has.

What type of matcha does Starbucks use? Where is Starbucks matcha sourced from?

Right now, the type of matcha Starbucks sources is from Korea, China, and Japan, with the quality not being consistently high. If you opt to enjoy your matcha latte without sugar and are a seasoned matcha drinker, you are likely to notice the difference in quality compared to a high-quality, ceremonial grade matcha from Uji, Japan.
